MALTA

Malta was a country we had always wanted to visit because Matt’s family is from Malta. It definitely was a surreal experience to travel here and see where the Zarb Family originated! Malta is a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Africa. It has a middle eastern feel to it with very historical buildings and monuments. It is a country full of culture, history, stories, and Maltese dishes. We are so excited to share our favorite spots in Malta!

(Click on the links below to visit the website for each location or activity!)

TOP PLACES TO STAY

-SLIEMA: Sliema is a newer and more local part of town across the water from Valletta. It’s actually just a 5 minute ferry ride from Valletta. It is right on the water and has many great restaurants, bars and shops you can walk to. This is where we stayed when we visited Malta and it was a great location!

-VALLETTA: Valletta is the capital of Malta and is home to many historical landmarks such as the co-cathedral, war grounds and Gardens. Valletta is a nice walking town with many lively restaurants and bars.

TOP RESTAURANTS

-THE TAP ROOM: The Tap Room is right in the middle of Valletta and is a charming restaurant. You need to make reservations because it books up quickly.

-MEDASIA FUSION LOUNGE: We went here one night for dinner and it was delicious! It is an Asian restaurant in Sliema serving awesome sushi, noodle dishes and drinks. It also has a hip, upbeat atmosphere.

-HAMMETTS CASTRO PUB: Hammetts is a laid-back, cozy, gastropub in Sliema. It has great outdoor seating and serves a variety of dishes.

TOP SPOTS TO GRAB A DRINK

-CITY CROWN: City Crown is in the center of Valletta on a cute, little street. It is a quaint bar with outdoor seating and live music at night. It’s a great place to sit outside, grab a drink and people watch!

-67 KAPITALI: 67 Kapitali was an excellent place to grab a drink in Valletta. We got an after dinner drink at this hip bar. They have fun drinks, a laid-back atmosphere and friendly bartenders.

-PARANGA: We decided to venture to Paceville for a happy hour drink since we were told by locals that this is the going out area. Paranga was a super fun area right on the water! We would highly recommend you check out Paceville for a drink or nightlife if you’re looking at going out!

-THE BLACK SHEEP: The Black Sheep is a cozy, laid-back bar and grill in Sliema. It is the perfect spot for a glass of wine or cocktail.

-THE BREW BAR & GRILL: The Brew Bar is a cozy, casual brew house in Sliema known for their craft beer.

TOP THINGS TO DO

-WALKING TOUR OF VALLETTA: Experience the main sites of Valletta on a free one hour walking tour of the city. This is a great way to see and hear about the main landmarks.

-ROLLING GEEKS TOUR OF THE 3 CITIES: In order to see the 3 cities, we decided to do the Rolling Geeks tour which takes you on your own personal guided tour in a golf cart. It was pretty neat to get to experience the 3 cities on our own in just 2 1/2 hours. We also had the option to stop along the way and get out to take pictures or grab some food.

-DOUBLE DECKER BUS: We took the Hop-on Hop-off bus along the South Route of Malta in order to see multiple sites in only 3 hours! We saw:

  • Marsaxlokk: Marsaxlokk is a small, picturesque, fishing village. If you’re wanting some fresh seafood then grabbing a bite to eat in Marsaxlokk is your best bet!

  • The Blue Grotto: The Blue Grotto is a complex of 7 sea caves surrounded by crystal, clear blue waters. If you have time to take a boat out to the Blue Grotto you definitely should! If not, photos from the island are great as well!

  • MEGALITHIC TEMPLES: The Megalithic Temples are Malta’s Ancient Ruins that are very unique and some are considered the oldest free standing structures in the world.

You also have the option to get off and on the bus if you want to explore a certain place which is fun! We got off at the three places listed above!

-BLUE LAGOON: If you have enough time, then you should definitely take a day trip to the Blue Lagoon! The Blue Lagoon is one of the most beautiful places in the Maltese Islands. You can doesn’t the day here relaxing on the beach, snorkeling or swimming.

-RENT A BOAT FOR THE DAY: You can rent a boat from the day from the beach in Sliema or Valletta and explore the beautiful blue waters.

-WALK THE PROMENADE: The Promenade runs along the coastline of Sliema. It is a beautiful walk right along the water!
